Personally, I have nothing against vegans. I’m not vegetarian and I certainly believe that there are some people out there who are too preachy about it, but I don’t think that gives anyone the right to b*tch people out for being a vegan. At the end of the day, if you’re an adult and you get angry by someone else eating or not eating food, you need to get your sh*t straight because that’s a pathetic way to live your life.
But yeah, the pink-haired dreadlock-having leaflet-throwing banana-republic-shopping douche on the street corner handing out pamphlets is super annoying. I get it. The movement can be associated with self-righteousness because… well, they can be self-righteous. So yeah.
But one Swiss town felt that their local vegan was… well, something special. So special that they rejected her application for a Swiss passport.
Nancy Holten is 42 and moved to Switzerland when she was 8 years old. She has two children, both Swiss born, and has been trying to get a Swiss passport for some time. The problem is that in Switzerland a big part of the application involves the government asking the people in your community if they feel you should be part of Switzerland. And Nancy’s community has overwhelmingly said “no”.
The main issue seems to be cow bells, which are a Swiss tradition but which Nancy has frequently campaigned against. She told reporters,
“The animals carry around five kilograms around their neck. It causes friction and burns to their skin. The sound that cow bells make is a hundred decibel. It is comparable with a pneumatic drill. We also would not want such a thing hanging close to our ears?”
That’s… that’s not unreasonable. But it has set a lot of people off in the town she lives. A local resident told reporters that Nancy has a “big mouth” and that “she annoys us and doesn’t respect our traditions”. Nancy has also raised concerns about hunting, pig races, and the local church bell.
It’s not clear how this second blocking of her passport will affect her ability to keep living in Switzerland, but hopefully things will work out.
