The sea is a mysterious place. It has captured the imagination of people since the dawn of time with the capacity for incredible beauty and terrible danger. But the sea is also a source of sheer mind-numbing terror. Those inky black depths go for miles down and most of the ocean floor is unexplored. Don’t believe us when we say it’s a nightmare factory?
That’s a humpback angler fish and it is even close to the ugliest thing in the sea. But wait, it gets worse. Hurricanes often result in all sorts of crazy things washing up on shore after the storm churns up the water like a cup of tea being stirred and after the horrific Hurricane Harvey last year Texas got a super, duper, weird surprise from the ocean.
What the hell is that?
At first no one had a clue and the internet was absolutely buzzed with chatter about it. It clearly looks like a disgusting sea monster and just a glance is enough to convince me to never go swimming again! But scientists have decided to face up to the challenge and identified the creature.
What is it?
“It might be Bathyuroconger vicinus or Xenomystax congroides,” he said. “All three of these species occur off Texas and have large fang-like teeth. Too bad you can't clearly see the tip of the tail. That would differentiate between the ophichthid and the congrids.”
It’s an eel! Not that big a deal, but it doesn’t look very pretty even with all its flesh on!
