Mental health is a serious issue, and scientists have spent a lot of time pondering a pretty simple question. Why do women have worse mental health than men? No one is 100% sure why but in their investigations scientists looked at women’s mental health over their lifetime and found an interesting fact. Women get much, much, happier in their later years. In fact, women over 85 have fewer mental health problems than their male counterparts and scientists think they know why.
It’s because, for most of them, their husbands are dead. Scientists state that for many women marriage and family brings a great deal of burden, whereas their later years are a time when many of these burdens ease up. Children move away and husbands… err… well they die. They go the way of the dodo, shuffle off the mortal coil, join the choir eternal, and become husbands-formerly-known-as-alive.
The survey asked 8000 people 12 questions about their mental health, including questions about anxiety, happiness and depression. The vast majority of people reported no problems but 19% did report a score of 4+, which strongly indicates the presence of a mental illness. All joking aside, that’s a huge number and it conveys the seriousness of mental health.
“Across the age groups, but particularly in the young, it is a cause for serious concern for us as a society,” one researcher told reporters, emphasising the problem.
But women of the internet! Does this sound right to you? Do you think women get happier because their husbands take a long walk off a cliff? Or do you think there’s something else to play? Do you now look forward to your senior years knowing you’ll finally be happy? Or do you think this is all a load of b*llocks?
