49-year-old Stephen Titland was recently arrested after he was caught trying to break into a car. The night previously he had gone around a street and tried to force the doors open on each and every last vehicle. Security cameras caught him in the act but the problem with CCTV is it is often poor quality. Using footage alone the police did not have the ability to go out and arrest the culprit.
So they decided to park an undercover, unmarked, police vehicle on the same street the following night and wait to catch him in the act. What the police expected to happen was they would catch Stephen Titland trying to force his way into the cars and they would be able to jump out and catch him. What they didn’t expect was for him to walk right up to the car they were sitting in and open the door.
That’s right, this guy tried breaking into a car filled with cops.
We can’t even imagine the look on his face. He must’ve thought he’d finally cracked it. Who knows how many nights he’d been going around, trying handle after handle in a desperate bid to find one unlocked and finally, finally, he finds one. He tries the handle, hears the clunk of an opening mechanism, and just as he bends down and gets ready to enter the vehicle he looks up and sees four police staring at him like he’s the stupidest person to ever live.
To be fair, he is definitely a contender for stupidest person of the year.
