Sue Elcock from Lilleshall, Shropshire was on holiday visiting her 49-year-old son Simon in Western Australia when she netted a gigantic 130lb beast of a fish that was the size of a full three seater sofa. Sue, who's 68 by the way, fancied something a little different on her family trip so she joined her son on a charter boat for a 5am fishing trip off the coast of Lancelin. Far from a seasoned fisherman, Sue wasn't expecting much and had hopes to bring back a little fish, if anything at all, but she surprised herself and everyone else on board by netting a boat record 62kg Bass Groper. Sue, Simon and all the others on the boat had an intense tussle for the fish that lasted for 40 minutes before finally dragging him on board.
The giant fish measured in at a whopping 5ft 4in long, which is actually two inches larger than Sue! She spoke to The Sun to talk about the amazing net: "Simon is an experienced sea angler and I have been out with him before when I have been visiting he and Michelle. The biggest fish I've caught before was a snapper about a foot long and when this one took the bait on the bottom the tug on the line didn't seem much. I was using one of Simon's electric reels but it still took nearly an hour to get him on board. And I just couldn't believe the size of it when it reared it's head out the water. It was the size of a settee." Sue has very sweetly left the fish for Simon to eat for months in end by freezing it for him, not unlike your mum might do when you're at uni. Isn't she a sweetheart?
Sue said: "I've helped cut him up and get all that fish into the freezer. Simon and Michelle will be enjoying fish barbies for months when I'm long back in the UK." Bless. The company they went on the trip with, Reel Force Charters, posted a video of Sue wrestling with the reel in the depths of action. Apparently, on the day of the catch she'd "smashed back two beers before the men have barely wiped the sleep from their eyes", I'm liking everything I hear about this woman. Even her fishing extraordinaire son Simon thinks she smashed it, saying: "Mum caught a giant fish and I was thrilled for her. The photo of her holding the fish is one to treasure." She's still got a month to go on the trip, maybe a croc next?
