On April 4th police, the fire department, and local residents in US Florida came together to help put out a fire that had engulfed a nearby house. No one was hurt as part of the fire and a dog was saved from the home, but one of the people living in the house was also arrested after they refused to leave the building while it was still burning down. That same individual was later arrested after police suspected the fire was the result of arson.
The world is insane. What jerk reported aand complained?— Steve Sapato (@stevesapato) April 24, 2018
And they might commend him while reprimanding him? Idiots! https://t.co/xpA41ZOvxO
It has also recently emerged that one of the men who helped try to put the fire out was an off-duty fireman. Captain Jay Schwartz, aged 40, could be seen in some of the footage wearing a t-shirt and jeans as he uses a hose to help wet nearby houses and reduce the risk of the fire spreading to other buildings. However, it has emerged that since the day of the fire someone has filed an anonymous complaint against Captain Schwartz.
“Whenever there is a complaint filed we have to look into it. We have to gather the facts and that's what we're doing right now," said Polk County Deputy Manager “But I commend him for his actions. Ideally, he should have his protective equipment on but he saved someone's life.”
Despite the complaint, and the resultant investigation, the Deputy Manager has made it clear that Schwartz behaved heroically and was responsible for helping someone stuck in the house to escape.
“I commend him for saving a life,” he told reporters.
“I lost all of my important papers, my medicines, my Social Security card. We lost everything
“Whether they’re on duty or off duty that's their job. He should be in no trouble for that at all,” said Humphries, who lived in the home at the time. “He should be awarded instead of disciplined.”
Reporters have since requested a copy of the complaint but have had the request denied. And while the local fire department has stated that, if it finds evidence of a violation it will be forced to send Schwartz a letter of reprimand, it still has every intention of awarding him an honour in acknowledgment of his actions.
Overall, this is a pretty weird situation where a man who saved a life is going to be both punished and rewarded for his behaviour. Furthermore, we’d love to know who submitted that complaint, and why.
