People in a small South African town have been reeling with shock and horror after a deceased woman gave birth to a stillborn child in her coffin ten days after her death.
The deceased 33-year-old mother of five was nine months pregnant when she passed away leaving her husband and mother distraught at the loss of life. Initially she had complained about shortness of breath but before paramedics could get to her, she had died at her home in Mbizana.
Ten days later on the night before her funeral she gave birth.
Staff at the parlour responsible for the funeral arrangements have described the experience as ‘traumatising’ and some of the local villagers have cried out about the possibility of witchcraft. Her own mother told reporters,
“First‚ I was devastated by the untimely death of my daughter and now I got the shock of my life to learn that she has given birth while she had been dead for 10 days. What is that? God please come and intervene.”
For those interested medical specialists have confirmed that dead bodies can give birth to stillborn children many days, sometimes weeks, after the initial death of the mother. Although they did state that it was very unusual, it just wasn’t impossible and there are historical cases of it happening. Either way this must have been a horrific event for the family to experience, and we can only offer our condolences.
