Officials in Florida say they have arrested a woman after it emerged she had been having a sexual relationship with her brother. Police were made aware of the situation when Pauline Elizabeth Martin, aged 33, gave birth to her child on November 21st 2017. At the time the baby was born with “severe medical problems” and was relocated to a specialist facility at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando where genetic testing was done as part of a routine diagnostic procedure. What doctors and police probably weren’t expecting those tests to reveal was that the child’s medical problems were due to their parents being closely related.
Afterwards police questioned Pauline at the McDonald’s restaurant where she worked as a cashier. She admitted to having a “romantic sexual relationship” with her brother and revealed they had last had sex on the 21st March 2017. She revealed the relationship had been on and off for the last six years.

Neither Pauline nor her brother filled out the necessary paperwork to get a birth certificate for the child, nor did they fill out the necessary Medicaid documents detailing the child’s true parents.
“She said she was going to end her relationship with her brother because she knows it is wrong,” police wrote in a recent statement, pointing out the likely reason behind Pauline’s decision not to get the child a birth certificate.
Pauline has since been arrested for incest and resisting law enforcement without violence. Meanwhile police say they are keen to speak to her brother, the father of the child, but have so far been unable to find him.

This isn’t the first case of 2018 to involve a Florida couple arrested for incest. Last month a father and daughter were arrested after neighbours reported them to the police saying that the pair were having sex in their backyard. When police arrived the father and daughter duo admitted to having sex in their garden but were adamant it was a “one-time thing” and not an indication of a long-term relationship. Police were not convinced, and both were arrested and charged with incest.
Incest is a crime in most states and developed nations although the degree of prohibition varies greatly. While most would consider a relationship between first cousins to be an uncomfortable idea, it’s rarely illegal. However, relationships between siblings and parents are almost always frowned upon and punishable with a prison sentence. This case highlights a big part of the reason why: children born to parents who are closely related will often experience disfigurement, genetic illnesses, and severe medical difficulties throughout their life.
