On the 5th October Time Magazine published a piece detailing a long list of accusations against famous movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein was co-founder of Miramax, a major production company responsible for films like Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love. The NY Times alleged that he accusations dated back decades and that Weinstein had used prolonged campaigns of litigation and harassment to keep the long-list of accusers quiet.
The news rocked Hollywood and has been the start of a massive movement committed to ending sexual harassment and assault in the entertainment industry and beyond. The revelations it has revealed have included accusations against big names such as Louis CK, Kevin Spacey and James Franco. Many have responded to the claims in different ways. Perhaps most famously Kevin Spacey came out as gay in a move that seemed to have only fanned the flames and made it worse for himself.
But Harvey Weinstein has remained largely quiet. His litigation against his most prominent opponent, Rose McGowan, have been remained on-going and largely underreported but despite that he has done his most to lay low and keep quiet.
Today Harvey Weinstein hit back, claiming that emails from Ben Affleck prove that he did not rape Rose McGowan.
“She never told me nor did I ever infer that she was attacked by anyone… Any accounts to the contrary are false. I have no knowledge about anything Rose did or claimed to have done,” Affleck wrote.
Weinstein’s lawyers have elaborated,
“As a general matter, Harvey Weinstein and his attorneys have refrained from publicly criticising any of the women who have made allegations of sexual assault against Mr Weinstein despite a wealth of evidence that would demonstrate the patent falsity of these claims.
"Watching the 'performance' by Rose McGowan as she looks to promote her new book however, has made it impossible to remain quiet as she tries to smear Mr Weinstein with a bold lie that is denied not only by Mr Weinstein himself, but by at least two witnesses.”
Rose McGowan’s response?
“F*** you you f****** douche bag loser from hell. You will burn. You will be an empty suit coffin. You go fall off the planet you f***.”
So far it is unclear how this will fold and if the emails will be made public but for now this represents a significant break in from Weinstein’s approach to date.
