Kelly Samuels from Cambridgeshire in the UK was recently saddened to discover that her pet cat, Casper, had terminal kidney failure. The vet explained that the cost of treatment would be in the thousands of pounds and Kelly was faced with a terrible decision that many pet owners know of. She couldn’t afford the treatment, and without it Casper was going to suffer a long and slow death.
So Kelly asked the vet to take Casper and put him to sleep, hoping that what she was doing was for the best.
But it was days later that a family-friend of Kelly’s contacted her with some strange information. Her cat was on sale on Facebook marketplace for £50! Kelly found the post and noticed that it was indeed Casper up for sale. Confused and upset she phoned the vet only for them to tell her that Casper did not actually have kidney failure. He only had an abscess that was easily drained and which had no impact on Casper’s long-term survival. Kelly explained,
“The vet said on the Friday that he would need lengthy treatment that would be of high cost, that’s why it was agreed for his care to be signed over because I couldn’t afford the hundreds of pounds, he was put up on a selling page two days later as a healthy cat.”
So why was Casper on sale? And why was she not informed?
Kelly asked the vet for her cat back but they wouldn’t budge. They wanted her to pay significant costs to cover the cat’s stay at the veterinary practice. Writing on her Facebook Kelly explained the heartache this caused her,
“I have three broken-hearted children here that loved that cat to the moon and back, one of them special needs that is having trouble understanding. He should be at home with his family in the surroundings he knows and loves.”
Kelly later created a Facebook page that gathered significant public and media interest and the good news is that Casper is finally back with the right family! But talk about a nightmare situation. This sounds more like something out of a strange piece of fiction rather than a real-life story. As a pet-owner, this kind of thing makes my skin crawl.
