For those of us who aren’t fluent in espagn… espann… spanio…. Spanish. For those of us who aren’t fluent in Spanish, the word for the colour ‘black’ is ‘negro’. Simple enough, right? It’s a bit like that African country called “Niger” where you giggle for a bit at it but then quickly move on and do something more important with your day because getting upset over that kind of thing makes you look like a moron.
Apparently, no one told Twitter this because over the weekend a young woman lost her dog and tried asking around for help.
negro is missing😢 please if anyone sees him message me!!! pic.twitter.com/mo2l760hLi— becky. (@rebeca_macias18) January 20, 2018
The girl’s dog was called Negro because he was black, and the girl was Mexican and spoke Spanish as her first language. Cue stupidity.
Some people argued that the Spanish language is racist.
First of all the fact that negro is used in Spanish as a color is racist asf. The end https://t.co/JSZhtkqWAx— HER (@BeautiFul_JaA) January 22, 2018
Others said that naming her dog Negro was racist.
You knew what you did by calling your dog that. Hold that L— No Bitches Jnr (@CustardKilla) January 21, 2018
And there was the subtle implication in some Tweets that she didn’t deserve to find her dog.
You definitely ain't gonna find that dog now with a name like that.....— Luna Lovegood⚜️ (@Luyanda_D__) January 20, 2018
Thankfully though some people weren’t massive douches and rushed to her defence.
I’m so sorry about your missing dog and everyone’s ignorance omfg. I hope you find him!!!— Kennedy 🦒🌺 (@KennYouuNot) January 20, 2018

People really just always ready to pull the race card , it's so agg🙄. She clearly is Hispanic. I didn't even take Spanish and I know Negro mean black and then your dog is black .... I really hope you find your dog girl. ignore those people. https://t.co/gSpIQBcTCl— ✨ Vashti ✨ (@itsssV) January 21, 2018
homegirl is reaching over here, Black is a color the dog is black and so his name is “black” if you feel offended, you might be the problem, this just like if they name a dog brownie for being brown.— Denisse Ramirez (@babyassdee) January 21, 2018
In the end it looks like most people knew enough to chill out, but it doesn’t change the fact that some people were that cringe-inducingly dumb. Also, no word on if Negro was returned safely to his owner. Which, really, is the whole reason this argument started in the first place.
