A schoolteacher has been fired from a position in a Miami school after she posted photos of her wedding on Facebook. The wedding, which happened on Saturday, resulted in Jocelyn Morffi being fired on Monday the following week. The reason for the termination, according to the school, was that Jocelyn signed an employment contract that contained a clause requiring her to be a practicing Catholic.
The same-sex marriage ceremony, they argued, meant she violated that clause. Archdiocese Agosta told reporters,
“As a teacher in a Catholic school their responsibility is partly for the spiritual growth of the children. One has to understand that in any corporation, institution or organization there are policies and procedures and teachings and traditions that are adhered to.
“If something along the way does not continue to stay within that contract, then we have no other choice.”
Parents, however, have taken a different approach and are furious that Jocelyn has been fired. One parent told local press,
“We were extremely livid. They treated her like a criminal and they didn't even let her get her things out of her classroom.
“Our only concern was the way she was with our children, the way she taught our children and this woman by far was one of the best teachers out there.”
Parents shared this letter they received Thursday — the school calling the decision “difficult and necessary.” Letter doesn’t mention Jocelyn Morffi’s sexuality or explain why school fired her. pic.twitter.com/R7Kv3IgnPk— Michael Spears NBC6 (@MikeSpearsNBC6) 9 February 2018
Another parent also defended Jocelyn, saying,
“This teacher in particular has made such a contribution to the school. She never imposes her personal beliefs on others. She just does everything in love. She has a way of teaching that is so amazing.”
Reports also mention 20 parents attending the school during the week as part of a protest to make known their feelings of anger regarding Jocelyn’s dismissal. Meanwhile, Jocelyn had this to say on her official Facebook account,
“This weekend I married the love of my life and unfortunately I was terminated from my job as a result. In their eyes I'm not the right kind of Catholic for my choice in partner.”
