David and Louise Turpin have been charged with torture and child endangerment after police discovered thirteen of their children chained up in the basement. So far the reasoning for the children’s imprisonment remains unknown although they showed signs of severe malnourishment and were described by one neighbour as “very very pale-skinned, like they had never seen the sun. It was mostly girls, they were tiny, they looked a little malnutritioned [sic].”
The sickening case has captured America’s attention for the bizarre way that David and Louise manufactured the appearance of an apparently healthy family on social media. Pictures show them with their children in Disneyworld, at their wedding, and out and about wearing matching Dr Seuss inspired clothing. But despite the photos showing a normal and happy family the reality was a grim life of captivity.
A policeman on the scene told reporters,
“Deputies located what they believed to be 12 children inside the house, but were shocked to discover that seven of them were actually adults. The victims appeared to be malnourished and very dirty.”
It has yet to emerge why the children were imprisoned but they are currently undergoing medical treatment at a local hospital. Hopefully more will be revealed as the story develops.
