How do you get something over a wall?
This has been a question in the minds of Mexican drug smugglers for a long long time. Flying, digging, jumping and throwing have all been used. And as authorities continue to crack down on these smugglers they have resorted to some pretty unique methods in a bid to keep getting stuff over (or under) a wall. Extensive tunnels, submarines and catapults have all been found by law-enforcement agents seeking to stem the flow of illegal drugs into the US.
And now we can add ‘bazooka’ to that bizarre list.
Mexican federal authorities have reported discovering the unique creation in Agua Prieta which lies just south of the border. Weirdly enough, it’s not the first bazooka they’ve found there, but it’s certainly the first one to have a van with a sliding roof so it can be aimed skyward. The cannon also relies on an enormous air compressor to shoot canisters loaded with drugs over the wall via air pressure. Just how big are the cannisters?
A similar cannon fired cannisters containing 85 pounds of marijuana, and launched them over 500 feet past the wall. It’s likely this one could achieve similar results. For those who are curious, that’s about $42,500 worth of drugs.
This sort of crazy claptrap invention is a powerful demonstration of the way that the war on drugs has rapidly escalated over the last two decades. It was only recently in the 2000s that smugglers first resorted to simply throwing small hand-sized packages of drugs over the border wall. As one US agent puts it,
"[these operations are] indicative of the ever-evolving and persistent intent of TCOs to exploit the border environment."
In other word - "sh*t’s getting serious".
