Florida - A 30-year-old man was shot dead by police on October 12th after shooting and killing his mother’s friend.
Brian Desario was killed after police were called his by mother because of the fatal shooting. When police arrived he was already walking towards a nearby elementary school with gun in hand, and the responding officers were forced to fire after Desario began aiming his rifle at the school. The 30-year-old man was already known for his mental health issues and had acquired a sizeable stockpile of illegal weapons and ammunition.
However, what makes the story particularly interesting was that Desario shot and killed his mother’s friend because he believed he had been flirting with his girlfriend.
A girlfriend who doesn’t exist.
As Sheriff Nocco puts it,
"The suspect believed that the mom's friend; who is the victim in this case, was trying to pick up Brian's girlfriend and hit on Brian's girlfriend. Please note, Brian does not have a girlfriend. In his mind he did. But, in reality he didn't."
On a serious note, this story brings attention to some legitimate issues surrounding gun violence and mental health in America. Brian Desario clearly suffered from severe delusions and his possession of numerous illegal firearms, and the fact he made a beeline towards the nearest school, suggests that this story could easily have gone very differently and had much a much more tragic outcome under different circumstances. Thankfully, the quick police response and the decision of Brian’s mother to phone the police immediately after the shooting allowed this killer to be stopped before it escalated into a mass shooting.
