Malcolm Applegate (pictured) was so fed up with his wife that he left home and slept rough in a forest for 10 years
A 62-year-old man has acquired internet fame after it was revealed that he left his wife and hid in the forest for ten years to avoid her nagging. He had been married to her for three years before he left. A period of time he describes as ‘alright’ until his working hours became too much and she started to demand that he cut his hours down. As a gardener who enjoyed his job this was not something he wanted.
So he just upped and left without a single word to his family and friends. He proceeded to walk south, from Birmingham, towards London over a three-week period until he reached Kensington. There he camped in the woods near a garden centre alongside two other men and worked at a local garden centre where he would shower and wash.
Later on he would travel and settle down in Greenwich where he stayed and worked at a hostel for the homeless. During this time he reached out to his sister, after ten long years without contact, and the two reunited. He still lives at and works for a homeless charity in London and spends much of his free time raising money for other homeless charities.
"I'd like the people who donate to Emmaus to know that I am grateful for being given a second chance at life,” Malcolm told reporters when describing his current situation. "I have a lovely room, I am able to work and I can still lead an active social life - I love it here - my life is officially back on track."
