Karl Pollard, 46, was disgusted when a hotel reported him for suspected grooming after checking in with his young daughter. He had booked a room at a Travelodge with his teenage daughter so the two could visit his sick mother nearby, only for the hotel chain to phone the police and tip them off that he was a pedophile. The pair has travelled up to Macclesfield, Cheshire from their home in South Wales in hopes of visiting the girl’s grandmother who is understood to be suffering from terminal cancer. Pollard spoke to the Daily Star to say “It was an emotional trip already – but it was made so much worse. One minute I was brushing my teeth, the next I was being told I was a paedophile. We’re not sure how long [my mother] has left.”
Mr Pollard is a carer for his wife Kim, who has multiple sclerosis, and initially thought the policeman at the door was going to give him some terrible news about her. When they explained they were there to see if he was grooming his 14 year-old daughter he was devastated and she was taken away to be questioned where she is said to have been crying and worried she would be taken away from her parents.
Travelodge have offered Karl a full refund for the stay, and issued the following statement: “All our hotel teams are trained according to national guidelines supported by the NSPCC. In the past proactive action by our hotel teams has helped to safeguard young people at risk. In this instance we got it wrong.” The police also added “Staff at the Travelodge did the right thing by reporting what they believed to be suspicious activity to officers, although thankfully there was nothing untoward and it turned out to be a misunderstanding.”
