Recent studies have added significantly to the latest body of research arguing that essential oils cause gynaecomastia, a rare condition that causes men to develop breasts. Scientists have expressed concern over the increasing incidence of gynaecomastia, and a number of cases have been directly linked to the use of essential oils. Now, a key study has revealed that essential oils boost oestrogen and block testosterone, promoting the development of breast tissue.
In most of the case studies the problem ceased when men stopped using products that contained essential oils.

More evidence essential oils 'make male breasts develop' https://t.co/dJyhsxA7jf
Essential oils are found in soaps, lotions, shampoos and hair-styling products. They include a diverse range of products that can be used for a range of applications including aromatherapy, pharmacology and alternative medicine. But now lead researcher J. Tyler Ramsey has cautioned against their use:
“Our society deems essential oils as safe. However, they possess a diverse amount of chemicals and should be used with caution because some of these chemicals are potential endocrine disruptors.
“Lavender oil and tea tree oil pose potential environmental health concerns and should be investigated further.”
He went on to state that the chemicals responsible for the condition were found in 65 other essential oils, and not just lavender and tea tree, although those were the two with the highest concentrations. Speaking about the discovery, one Professor said that:
“[They] have confirmed why an individual using such oils containing these chemicals may develop breast tissue.
“The anti-male hormone effects are rather unexpected and it is not possible to comment further without the data.
“Of course, not everyone exposing themselves to such oils has adverse effects, so it is possible there are particular individuals who may be more sensitive to the effects of the chemicals, or perhaps are using the products in excess.
“Clearly, the longer-term effects of such exposure are unknown.”
Chemicals in Essential Oil Linked to Abnormal Breast Growth in Young Boys https://t.co/JOeCuRKHG5— Gendron Recherche (@gendron_gendron) 18 March 2018
Despite the growing body of research other scientist have preached caution and warned:
“At present, there is insufficient evidence to support the concept that exposure to lavender and tea tree oil containing products cause gynaecomastia in children, and further epidemiological and experimental studies are required.”
Nonetheless, if you’re a guy and you like a bit of lavender you may want to reconsider its use given that there’s a good chunk of evidence saying you might just grow enormous breasts. Worst of all, if anyone asks you why you have breasts, you’ll have to confess to using essential oils.
