Abdulrahim Omar, aged 21, has been jailed for eight months after he shaved a child’s head as a “punishment”. After the haircut, where the boy’s hair was cut with a number one clipper (equivalent to 1/8th of an inch or just under 4mm in length) he ran and dialled 999 because he felt so humiliated. He told the court that during the haircut the barber and other customers present sat around him and laughed as his hair was shaved off.
Omar was promptly arrested and charged with assault occasioning to bodily harm. He pled guilty to the charges and his defence barrister told the court:
“Mr Omar recognises he made a grave mistake.
“He knows there is no excuse and knows what he has done is fundamentally wrong. The actions were a one-off.”
Presiding judge Richard Foster told Omar that it was the “most disgusting piece of humiliation” and that “This offence was the premeditated humiliation of a 10-year-old. It was despicable conduct to treat a child in that way.”
The prosecuting barrister said that Omar had caused “psychological and physical harm”.
Omar told the courts that he had shaved the young boy’s head as a punishment after he found out the 10-year-old boy was using a straight razor to try and shave. He said this was a very dangerous thing to do so to teach the boy a lesson he shaved his hair.
In January this year a US man had his hairdresser arrested for assault after his haircut was intentionally sabotaged by the barber. The hairdresser in question took the opportunity to run a bare set of shears over the man’s head without any comb or length adjustment. The result was a large strip of the man’s hair missing; a sort of inverse mohawk running from his forehead to his crown. The barber was ticketed, but not actually arrested or jailed.
The customer argued that the barber had also intentionally nicked his ear with a pair of scissors which helped convince police he should be ticketed, although given the landing strip running from the customer’s forehead upwards, we suspect that it was the haircut that had actually irked him.
