In 1975 researchers working at the Basel's Barfüsser church in Switzerland found a mummified corpse. The body had been buried in front of the altar along with expensive clothes and jewellery. Experts concluded this must have been a very important woman with a high standing position in society. After all, she had been buried in a very privileged position.
For decades scientists have remained baffled over the identity of the woman. There was no marker and no indication of the body’s time of burial although tests on the coffin wood did reveal that the coffin dated to sometime around the 16th Century.
Another indicator of the body’s age was that she had been riddled with mercury. It was believed during the 16th to 19th Centuries that mercury could be used to treat syphilis and it is common to find bodies from that era with trace amounts of mercury.
Stranger yet, historians also revealed that the corpse had been dug up once before in 1843 and that experts from that time had undergone a similarly confused experience with no one being able to identify the body’s identity.
Well now scientists have revealed the woman’s identity via the use of DNA testing and they have confirmed that the woman was Anna Catharine Bischoff and she was the member of a wealthy family in the Swiss city.
And she is also the great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandmother of former London Mayor and current Foreign Secretary of the UK, Boris Johnson!
What a family resemblance.
