Three children and their mother are currently in hospital and in stable condition after they all took a dangerous amount of Phencyclidine otherwise known as PCP. One of the children is 16-years-old while the other two are both under the age of one. Police are investigating whether the drugging was intentional after the mother claimed she accidentally gave the children the drug thinking it was vanilla extract.
“In severe overdoses it can actually lead to coma and death, and it tends to shut down body organs,” said Dr Tama Sawyer, Managing Director of KU Poison Center. She also told reporters she had never seen a case in her entire life where a child under the age of one had ingested PCP.

She also said that the children were lucky to be alive:
“It causes your temperature to go up. Once your temperature goes up, destroying organs, the, kidneys, lungs. Every organ system depends upon a very narrow body temperature. If you get that elevated to over 103, then you are talking deadly.”
The mother told police that she had been making the children French toast when she used what appeared to be a bottle of vanilla extract. She said that a family member’s ex-boyfriend had been living there recently and that he had been a drug user, and she suspected it was his PCP.
Drug users often conceal PCP in vanilla extract bottles because the dark tinting of the bottle helps to hide it.

PCP, also known as angel dust, is a powerful drug known for its intense states of euphoria (immense happiness) and dysphoria (immense anxiety or sadness). Psychological effects include severe changes in body image, loss of ego boundaries, paranoia, and depersonalization. Hallucinations, euphoria, and suicidal impulses are also reported, as well as occasional aggressive behaviour. PCP is renowned for making people dangerously violent towards others.
No criminal charges have been filed yet, but the police said they are still investigating the matter.
