A gunman claiming to be a member of ISIS has shot a policeman and taken several hostages at a Super U supermarket in Trebes, Southern France. France's Interior Ministry said security officials were carrying out an operation at the supermarket.
Shortly before the supermarket was ambushed, the armed man shot and injured a police officer in the city of Carcassonne, around a 15-minute drive from Trebes. According to French media, the man holding hostages at the supermarket has claimed he is inspired by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil). The Islamic State group has also claimed the French hostage-taking as their own, prosecutors have said.
People are being warned to avoid the area as the incident is ongoing. We'll have more updates as the story develops.
