Emil Radita, 53, and his wife Rodica Radita, 53, are facing charges of first degree murder after their 15-year-old son died from starvation and untreated diabetes due to their refusal to seek medical help. The couple, who kept their son secluded and removed from all outside human contact, left the boy alone to go to church only to return and discover that he was no longer conscious and had stopped breathing. The couple, along with some family friends, then knelt and prayed for two straight hours before finally calling medical emergency services.
One of the first responders described the scene saying,
“There were multiple people in the residence when I got there that were, from my understanding, part of their church and they were in the home praying together.
“He basically looked like a skeleton with skin. His skull was very, very bony. You could count every rib. You could see every rib. His arms were extremely skinny as were his legs. He had open and dried lesions all over his body.” Another responder described him as,
“emaciated to the [point] that he looked mummified.”
Alex Radita was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was two years old. During his life his family never sought any form of treatment and as a result he was hospitalised multiple times due to several close calls. His parent’s refusal to seek treatment was so severe that Alex was even taken into custody by Canadian social services.
He was returned to the Raditas with one stipulation by the judge: they must take him to the doctor and begin treating his condition properly.
The Raditas responded by moving to Alberta where he was home schooled and kept away from all contact with the outside world. He was not treated by any doctors and no one who might help was around to see his condition deteriorate over time.
The Radita household also had adult children in the building at the time of the boy’s passing. They have confirmed that the Emil Radita phoned members of his church instead of the emergency services. The eldest son told reporters,
“I saw his face. It was so scary. It looked like he was dead. [We] started to pray. The Holy Spirit said he was in paradise.”
Now the Raditas are facing criminal charges of first-degree murder because of the roles they played in their son’s death.
