Rapper Drake, or champagne papi to those of us who spend too much time on the internet, might be one of the most generous musicians out there. After watching a special on World News with Diane Sawyer, Drake donated an entire recording studio to Strawberry Mansion High School, one of Philadelphia's most dangerous schools. His donation brought a new level of press attention to the school and they received contributions from across America as a result, actually doubling the school's college acceptance numbers. Then back in 2013 Drake, along with rapper the Game almost $23,000 to an Ohio mother who was the only survivor of a fire that killed her partner and five children. Clearly, philanthropy is important to the music mogul but he really kicked it up a notch when he splashed out $175,000 on shopping and university tuition for complete strangers in Miami this week.
Drake was visiting the Florida city filming a music video for his new single for God's Plan and he randomly showed up at a supermarket with a camera crew. Sabor Tropical Supermarket got one hell of a surprise visit when he hopped into a megaphone and told the crowd he was giving away $50k in groceries to anyone who needed it. Recipients of the free Froot Loops might have been used as a clever marketing ploy, but they really didn't care because they met Drake and got free food for a month. When he was in the area, he also spent another $125,000 on various good causes like a Women's Shelter, a local High School and funding a scholarship for a student at the University of Miami.
Destiny James, the girl who received the scholarship, took to Instagram to tell the story behind the cheque:
"This happened today. I applied to scholarships last year for which I had to write an essay. I received those scholarships and thought that was the end of it. Apparently, my essay and my story made it to other departments. I was contacted this weekend about doing a video speaking about where I come from, things I've been through, and why it is so important for scholarship donors to continue to donate. This was the surprise the whole time. Drake told me that he has read great things about me and appreciates how hard I've worked through so many trials and decided to give me $50K for my tuition. @champagnepapi THANK YOU SO MUCH!!' You don't understand what this means to me! I would've never imagined this happening to me. I'm just a girl from Denmark, SC that wants to MAKE IT and be somebody and for you to see my hard work means the world. Thank you so much. God I thank you. You are so great and amazing! Thank you for blessing me when I thought my hard work was going unnoticed. I'm living out my dreams. God's Plan."
If you love Drake, eternal momma's boy and thoughtful rapper, you know what to do. God's Plan is out now.
