It’s art, darling. You wouldn’t understand
Possibly the most sickeningly beautiful woman in the world, Ms Theron won a well-deserved Oscar for her turn as sex worker turned killer Aileen Wuornos in real life flick ‘Monster’. For the role, Theron gained 30 pounds (14 kg), shaved her eyebrows, and wore prosthetic teeth. Film critic Roger Ebert called it ‘the best film of the decade’, so she must have done something right.
Bale has toyed with both ends of the uglying-up scale, getting fat for his role in American Hustle and wasting away for his brittle portrayal of troubled Factory worker Trevor Reznik in the Machinist. Apparently for his daily diet consisted of "water, an apple and one cup of coffee per day, with the occasional whiskey" (approximately 55–260 calories). We bet his American Hustle diet was a lot more fun…
Emma Thompson sat in the makeup chair for two hours every day on set for Nanny McPhee, wearing a prosthetic nose, ears, warts, frazzled grey hair and huge fake teeth. Thompson not only acted in the lead role for the blockbuster but she also wrote the screenplay, based on children’s book series ‘Nurse Matilda’.
Some might say Johnny Depp has done a good job uglying himself up all on his own with his beer bloat and woman-beating (allegedly) personality, but that’s none of my business. What I do know is that for his role as James ‘Whitey’ Bulger in Black Mass, Depp took two hours every day in the makeup chair and had fake eyebrows and hair, individually punched hole by hole into his prosthetics. If that wasn’t enough - every single day a new prosthetic was needed for filming and they couldn’t be reused. Kudos to the makeup department.
Gorgeous, beautiful Jared Leto with his dreamy eyes and chiselled jawline put on a whole 67 pounds for the portrayal of John Lennon’s killer in Chapter 27 only for the film to bomb at the Box Office. Apparently Leto drank microwaved pints of ice cream every night for the role, and actually got gout and had to roll around in a wheelchair due to the stress of the weight gain on his body. He’s fully recovered now though and back to his perfect, handsome self. Did I mention that he was good looking…?
Gwyneth Paltrow wore a 25-pound fat suit for her role as one very big girl in Shallow Hal. Paltrow said playing Rosemary in the film made her realise how difficult it is to be overweight, when people on the street wouldn’t meet her eye contact in costume.
