For a period of time you couldn’t turn the TV on without Brendan Fraser turning up. For many children of the nineties this guy was everywhere. The Mummy, George of the Jungle, Looney Tunes, Bedazzled, and Monkey Bones are all movies that defined my early to mid-childhood. You couldn’t cross a playground without hearing someone sing “George! George! George of the jungle, watch out for that…”
I bet you finished that in your head, didn’t you?
Anyway, for a time Brendan Fraser was a huge A-list actor. Now there are probably full-grown teenagers who don’t even know who the guy is. What happened? He was there, and then he wasn’t. He kinda turned up in Journey to the Centre of the Earth and then after there was that third Mummy film we all forget about. But seriously, what happened? There are pictures of his gaining weight, rapidly ageing, and otherwise looking a bit worse for wear but so what? Movie actors often gain weight between roles and, surprise, surprise, people age. It still doesn’t really explain where the hell he went.
In a new interview with GQ, Brendan Fraser star reveals he was groped in 2003 by Philip Berk, a former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. https://t.co/ai4I4TLHJQ— USA TODAY (@USATODAY) 22 February 2018
Well the man himself recently came out in a GQ interview and described his experiences. In it he outlines a few major factors that contributed to him stepping away from acting. First, his son was diagnosed with autism:
“Griffin's rated on the autism spectrum. Um, and so he needs extra love in the world, and he gets it. And his brothers ever since they were small, one was always the spokesperson and the other was the enforcer.”
Second, he mentions that his mother got cancer and how it played a role in that infamous Sad Brendan meme:
“I buried my mom. I think I was in mourning, and I didn't know what that meant.
“Going to work—in between being in and out of those hospitals, that wasn't always possible. So what I'm saying to you sounds, I hope, not like some sort of Hey, I had a boo-boo. I needed to put a Band-Aid on it, but more of an account of the reality of what I was walking around in.”
And finally, Brendan describes how he was groped by a senior movie executive. At the time he reacted negatively and the press spun it as Brendan over-reacting to a gentle ass grab but Fraser insists it was anything but. As he puts it,
“His left hand reaches around, grabs my ass cheek, and one of his fingers touches me in the taint. And he starts moving it around.
“I felt ill. I felt like a little kid. I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry.
“I became depressed. I was blaming myself and I was miserable—because I was saying, ‘This is nothing; this guy reached around and he copped a feel.’ That summer wore on—and I can't remember what I went on to work on next.”
The good news is Brendan Fraser is starting to make a comeback! And it’s great that he feels comfortable enough to discuss his experiences now. I don’t know about you, but I’m still hoping for a George of the Jungle 2!
