It has been fifteen years since Bad Boys 2 and a whopping 23 since the original film first released in 1995. Yes, you read that right. The last time you say Will Smith and Martin Lawrence kicking ass on the big screen was 23 freakin’ years ago.
Makes me feel pretty damn old.
Anyway, for many children of the nineties Bad Boys was a seminal film that introduced bombastic action and combined it with buddy cop comedy alongside two huge comedic talents who worked brilliantly together. The end result was a brilliant movie that was both funny and thrilling and the huge financial success of the movies was responsible for Michael Bay getting a career and while also contributing to Will Smith’s monolithic success.
Put simply, Bad Boys helped shape pop culture in its current form. Unfortunately back in the day we had to wait eight long years before we got Bad Boys 2 and after 15 years it looked like we were just never going to get Bad Boys 3. Michael Bay is too busy making robots fight each other, Will Smith is desperate to make us like his son and Martin Lawrence is… (*quickly googles*) being happily married (huh that’s a nice surprise from a celebrity).
Meanwhile Sony has dragged its heels with endless script rewrites that the studio has never seemed happy with. And last year the director assigned to make the movie jumped ship and left the project leaving it dead in the water.
But not anymore! Sony has entered talks with a new pair of Moroccan directors who gathered a fair bit of positive attention for their previous films Snowfall and Gangsta. Furthermore Sony have put the movie back on their timeline with a 2019 release!
Here’s to smooth sailing from here on in because we want this film and we want it soon. If it takes much longer then Martin Lawrence and Will Smith will need to use zimmer-frames to reach the film set and the whole movie will just be about their struggle for regular bowel movements.
No thank you, make it before dementia sets in Sony! Actors don’t keep forever.
