Sound the Horn of Gondor
Amazon has closed a MASSIVE $250m deal with the Tolkien estate for the rights to produce a multi-series show based around the Lord of the Rings books. Sources say the Tolkien estate had been speaking with Amazon, Netflix and HBO but after negotiations, Amazon were the lucky winners.

The series is said to deal with events leading up to ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ and will hopefully fill the huge fantasy gap left when Game of Thrones finally ends. Amazon will be hoping to emulate the success of the Peter Jackson trilogy; the films having grossed more than $2.9 billion worldwide and won a total of 17 Oscars.

I’m personally hoping for more elf airtime, because feminine magic men are kind of my thing (Hi Loki) but the timeline leaves it happily open-ended in terms of who can pop up. We can almost definitely expect more Gandalf, though do we want him if he’s not Ian McKellen? Fan opinion is divided with some just excited to see more of their favourite world and others… worried Amazon are going to ruin their beloved franchise.
