Celebrities hate press junkets. They get asked the same questions about the film they’re promoting and the character that they’re playing over and over again all day for weeks. It’s excruciating. But they also get paid a lot of money and it’s a pretty integral part of the job. The interviewer is there to get a few quotes and advertise the new film, and the actor is supposed to play along. Sometimes things really don’t go according to plan though… these are our top seven most awkward celebrity interviews.
Solid, painful cringe for a full two and a half minutes. Jesse Eisenberg is doing the press run for his new movie ‘Now You See Me’ and he’s interviewed by Romina Puga, who has a show called “Say My Name”. She starts off the interview calling Morgan Freeman “Freeman” and it rapidly goes downhill from there as Jesse tears her apart and she flounders around trying to keep her head above water. I think this could have been Jesse’s idea of flirting but the interviewer is on record as saying she was definitely not feeling it and thinks he’s a jerk. What do you think – Jerk or Flirt?
The interviewer actually calls her Carla, which is beyond parody. This promotional interview for Paper Towns was done via video link, which makes it even harder for both sides to communicate – body language goes miles towards making jokes more obvious. Cara is on edge and the interviewers are dismissive and patronising, telling her to “go for a little nap” so she cuts out of the livestream early. Awkward.
Robert Downey Junior
RDJ is being interviewed by Channel 4 about the latest Iron Man movie and interviewer Krishnan Guru Murthy starts to delve into Robert’s private life and drug abuse as a younger man. Understandably Robert is a little confused at how a promotional interview is being used as an opportunity to grill him about mistakes made twenty years ago and he just gets up and leaves after a minute or so.
Krishnan strikes again, asking Quentin Tarantino a question about violence and its potential social effects that Quentin finds dull. As QT says, he gets this a lot. “[I don’t want to talk about anything serious] I’m here to sell my movie. Make no mistake. I refuse your question”. He seems kind of like a douche, but he’s not wrong and his opinions on the subject are easy to Google, give it a try.
Samuel L Jackson
Samuel actually handles this one really well. The interviewer confuses him with Lawrence Fishburne, which would be lazy journalism even without the obvious racial connotations. Jackson tears him apart but in a funny, measured way and enjoys making him squirm. The interviewer seems to be in agreement that he deserves it, and everyone has a good laugh by the end. Didn’t stop this clip going viral though. Samuel L Jackson and Laurence Fishburne are NOT the same person, guys.
The reporter really wants a clear scoop on Tom Hardy’s sexuality here, which he’s already spoken about a bit years ago when talking to Attitude magazine. He phrases his question badly, delivers it in a stuttering start-stop and completely gives up when a confused Tom Hardy straight up asks him “Why [he wants to know]?”. Good question to be honest, particularly on a press tour for the movie ‘Legend’.
