Sir David Attenborough is well known for his variety of beautiful documentary series on the BBC, including Blue Planet and Planet Earth which are both huge commercial and critical successes. A big part of all of David Attenborough’s shows is the message that the natural world is to be valued and conserved with many episodes often dedicated to the impact of climate change. Furthermore, Sir David has often revealed in interviews that a fundamental part of his filming philosophy is that he, and others on set, are not to interfere with the wildlife.
So it might not come as too big a surprise that he isn’t particularly amused with another famous nature show where interfering with wildlife is usually part of the point.
“We’ve never killed an animal,” he told The Sun. “Bear Grylls will have to answer for himself. But I wouldn’t willingly kill an animal just to get a shot.”
Bear Grylls own nature show often focuses on the survivalist aspect of nature and so it’s not uncommon for him to kill and eat animals as part of each episode. One recent episode drew a lot of complaints after it showed the star and one of his guests wrestling an alligator to the ground before stabbing it in the heart with a knife. This has, as you might expect, upset animal rights activists who have sent numerous complaints to Ofcom, and PETA who condemned the “miserable celebrities and producers” that were responsible.
In the same interview Attenborough also revealed that he will have a new show coming out soon on Netflix! So there’s some extra exciting news for all you nature buffs.
