Guardians of the Galaxy franchise director James Gunn posted some seriously controversial stuff on Twitter yesterday, after two of the biggest fandoms online went toe to toe against each other. Twitter user and Buzzfeed writer Arielle Calderon posted photos of Marvel's Groot and a porg from Star Wars with the caption 'which one do you save' and boy oh boy, the discourse was real. Thousands of fans flocked to comment their undying devotion to their fandom of choice, and Gunn, the famed Marvel director was one of them.

Gunn was pretty much appalled that the question would even be posed, pointing out that a porg is one single penguin-thing and Groot is an advanced life-form that uh... literally saved the world. He got into a full blown debate with Entertainment Tonight producer and host Ash Crossan, who was on the side of saving the porg mainly because they couldn't save themselves, which kind of proves James's point that Groot is clearly a more complex being who deserved to live in this Sophie's Choice dilemma.
First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) February 27, 2018
As part of Gunn's rousing defence, he said something that has literally shook the Marvel fandom to its core. Groot is dead and Baby Groot is his son. Most of us thought that Baby Groot was just a piece of Groot from the first movie, who was slowly growing back to his original size from a little sapling all over again. At the end of "Vol. 2," Baby Groot had shot all the way up to Teen Groot, so fans were eagerly waiting to see how big Groot was going to be by Guardians 3, but now we know it's not actually Groot 1.0 I feel let down. Has James Gunn betrayed us all by hiding the tragic truth? Well tat's up to you. We can all agree on one thing though... kill the porg.
