Game of Thrones fans are not going to like this. They’ve already had to get used to ridiculous wait times of a full year between each season. They’ve already had to get used to their favourite characters getting killed/raped/rape-killed all over the place. They’ve already had to get used to Littlefinger’s dodgy accent. Well now there’s an even worse bit of news.
Game of Thrones Season 8 will not be returning for a full year. That’s right. The usual one year long wait has doubled and will now be an agonising two years. That’s two full years without sordid booby violence and backstabbing dynastic madness. It was earlier last year that reporters first began to suspect it may take a hiatus after the showrunners said they wanted to take as much as time as possible to craft the perfect ending. Recently Sophie Turner, who plays the stunning Sansa Stark on the show, also revealed in an interview that it was very likely the show would be taking a break.
Unfortunately there is no news on when exactly the show will be airing. It’s equally likely that it could air January, June, or December in 2019. What we do know is that the final season will be just six episodes, although those episodes are meant to be very long and very epic.
Possible reasons for the delay, aside from writing, may be to do with the show’s cast gaining widespread popularity making it difficult to arrange shooting schedules. It has also been speculated that the hiatus is to give HBO’s other huge special-effects driven show Westworld a chance to shine in 2018 without being overshadowed by its bigger brother. Also, it’s quite likely that HBO may just be stretching things out to keep the GoT hype-train going for as long as possible!
