Sunawin Andrews, the model ex-girlfriend of Michael Fassbender, sought a protective order against the actor back in March 2010, and the court details have re-surfaced and caused controversy. Fassbender is said to have been physically violent and dragged Ms Andrews along with his car, causing her to suffer from a twisted ankle, blown out kneecap and vaginal bleeding from a ruptured ovarian cyst. Sunawin had apparently ran into an ex-boyfriend when the couple were out to dinner, and their greeting was taken by Fassbender as a sign of disrespect, causing him to fly into a jealous rage. The court documents also detail a further incident where the actor had fallen into a drunken stupor and when Ms. Andrews went top wake him up so he didn't miss a speaking engagement he threw her over a chair and broke her nose.
The allegations paint a disturbing picture of the actor, who recently married Lara Croft actress Alicia Vikander and is best known for his roles in the X Men franchise and Quentin Tarantino flick Inglorious Basterds. Sunawin's injuries were said to have totalled $24,000 in medical bills and the court granted the model a temporary restraining order before she withdrew her request in April 2010, one day before the scheduled hearing, for unknown reasons. The pair are understood to have reunited at the time, which may be why the order was withdrawn. Andrews currently lives in LA and works for an animal protection agency, and has not yet spoken about after the incident has re-surfaced. There is also no statement from Fassbender as yet, but the actor's mother spoke out at the time to say "Anyone who knows Michael at all knows that it’s a complete fabrication."
Andrews had several friends in attendance that night, and one spoke to testify that " [They were] with her that night. I know that they had a fight but I didn’t witness anything he did to her. When we got to the house, they were not fighting anymore.” The case is pretty murky, and clearly nobody knows what happened between the two of them apart from Fassbender and Andrews themselves, but the fact the allegations are resurfacing as part of the #MeToo movement raise an interesting question about what effect a domestic abuse allegation has on a successful, acclaimed actor. Will Fassbender finally suffer for this, after remaining blessedly untouched by the story for almost ten years? It remains to be seen.
